Mihintale
Mihintale is one of the most sacred and historic sites in Sri Lanka. Known as the “Missaka Pawwa,” it was here in the 3rd century BC that a historic meeting took place between the Buddhist monk Mahinda Thero and King Devanampiyatissa — an encounter that introduced Buddhism to the island and forever shaped its culture, art and philosophy. Rising 300 metres above the plains, the mountain is a complex of stupas, caves and ancient hospitals, and a sanctuary for anyone seeking a deep connection to the roots of Sri Lankan heritage.

The 1,840 granite steps are one of Mihintale’s most iconic frames — an ancient stone stairway, lined with frangipani trees, that leads to the summit. From Aradhana Gala, the highest point of the mountain, a 360-degree panorama sweeps across the Anuradhapura plains, with the setting sun painting the ancient stupas in shades of amber during golden hour. At its foot, Ambasthala Dagaba marks the exact spot of the historic meeting, its stupa surrounded by ancient stone pillars in near-perfect symmetry.
