Horton Plains
Perched at an elevation of 2,100 metres, Horton Plains National Park is a hauntingly beautiful highland sanctuary unlike any other place in Sri Lanka. It is a world of windswept grasslands, stunted “Cloud Forests,” and icy streams that shimmer under the morning sun. The air here is thin, crisp and carries a profound silence broken only by the call of an endemic bird or the rustle of the wind — a plateau that culminates in a dramatic, sheer precipice known as “World’s End.”
Book This Tour →World’s End & Baker’s Falls
The highlight of the 9km circular trek is the legendary World’s End — a sheer drop of nearly 880 metres (2,850 feet). Standing at the edge, looking down into the mist-covered valleys and tea estates below, is a heart-stopping moment of pure awe. Before reaching the main cliff, you encounter “Mini World’s End,” a 270-metre drop that serves as a breathtaking preview of the grandeur to come. Further along, Baker’s Falls — named after the explorer Sir Samuel Baker — tumbles through dense ferns and moss-covered trees, making you feel like an explorer discovering a hidden treasure in a lost world.
“A plateau where nature is both fragile and fierce, culminating in a sheer precipice at the edge of the world.” Central Highlands, Sri Lanka
Getting There
A Race Against the Mist
Timing defines the Horton Plains experience — the plateau rewards those who arrive early.
Reach World’s End before 9:00am, after which a white wall of mist usually rolls in and completely obscures the dramatic 880-metre drop.
A 270-metre drop encountered before the main cliff offers a breathtaking preview of the grandeur still to come.
Guardians of the Plains
For biodiversity lovers, Horton Plains functions as a living highland museum.
Often seen grazing near the entrance in the early morning mist, these majestic animals are the plains’ most photogenic residents.
Vibrant red Rhododendrons dot the grasslands — a splash of colour against the emerald green and misty grey.

World’s End

A Plastic-Free Zone
Horton Plains is a strictly enforced plastic-free national park. Carry reusable water bottles and eco-friendly snack packaging to respect its pristine environment.
The 9km Loop Trail
