Knuckles Mountain Range
Named for its uncanny resemblance to a clenched fist, the Knuckles Mountain Range is a rugged, mist-shrouded wilderness that remains one of Sri Lanka’s most untouched treasures. A UNESCO World Heritage site, this range is where the island’s biodiversity reaches its peak — a world of dramatic peaks, hidden waterfalls and isolated villages that have remained unchanged for centuries.
Book This Tour →Biodiversity & Greenery
Knuckles is a biological “island” within an island. Because of its isolated geography, it has evolved its own unique ecosystem — a stunning transition of vegetation from dry-zone scrub forests at the base to lush, dripping “cloud forests” at the summits. Walking through it means passing giant ferns, ancient moss-covered trees and wild orchids found nowhere else on Earth. To trek through Knuckles is to step into a primeval forest where the modern world ceases to exist, and only the rhythm of nature remains.

Getting There
The Rare Inhabitants
Because of its isolated geography, Knuckles has evolved a cast of residents found nowhere else.
Keep your eyes peeled for the Leaf-nosed Lizard and the Crested Lizard, species endemic to this specific mountain range.
The forest is a sanctuary for the Purple-faced Leaf Langur and the elusive leopard, who roams the silent ridges under the cover of the mist.
Rugged Terrain, Total Solitude
Knuckles is for the soul that seeks true adventure — rugged terrain, dense biodiversity, and trails that reward those willing to get a little wild.
The range is locally known for its “Dumbara” (misty) coats — a phenomenon best witnessed at sunrise from a high vantage point within the range.
An overnight stay in a luxury tented camp allows you to witness the mountains at dawn, when they are draped in their most beautiful misty coats.
Activities & Nearby Attractions
While Horton Plains has the famous cliff, Knuckles offers its own sheer drop over the Theldeniya valley and Victoria reservoir — with a sense of total solitude.
Surrounded by the Knuckles peaks, this remote village lets you experience the “Paramparika” (traditional) Sri Lankan lifestyle in its purest form.
One of hundreds of secret cascades hidden across the range, reachable by trekking a secluded trail through the forest.
Two moments to remember
Watching the misty coats settle over the ridgelines from a high vantage point at sunrise is Knuckles at its most beautiful.
Reaching a secluded cascade like Sera Ella and sitting behind the curtain of water is a refreshing reward after a long hike.
Things you’ll do
Walk from dry-zone scrub at the base up into dripping cloud forest, spotting endemic wildlife along the way.
Take in panoramic views over the Theldeniya valley and Victoria reservoir from this dramatic clifftop.
Experience traditional Sri Lankan village life amid emerald paddy fields deep within the range.
Best Times to Visit, Weather & Practical Wisdom
When to visit, what to expect from the leeches, and how to prepare.
Trekking Season
The best months for clear views and safe trekking are January to March and June to September, when the mist clears just enough to reveal the peaks.
The Leeches of the Forest
Like any healthy rainforest, leeches are present. We provide traditional “leech socks” and natural balms — many guests find it a fun, authentic part of the jungle experience.
Climate & Gear
The weather is unpredictable, shifting from bright sunshine to thick mist in minutes. Temperatures range from 18°C to 25°C, so a waterproof jacket and sturdy hiking boots are essential.
Three reasons Knuckles stands apart.
A UNESCO World Heritage Wilderness
Its isolated geography has let Knuckles evolve its own unique ecosystem, unlike anywhere else in Sri Lanka.
Peak Biodiversity
From endemic lizards and langurs to over 120 bird species, this is where the island’s biodiversity reaches its peak.
A World Untouched by Time
Isolated villages like Meemure have remained unchanged for centuries, deep within the range’s emerald folds.
