The Silent Plateau at the Edge of the World

Horton Plains

Perched at an elevation of 2,100 metres, Horton Plains National Park is a hauntingly beautiful highland sanctuary unlike any other place in Sri Lanka. It is a world of windswept grasslands, stunted “Cloud Forests,” and icy streams that shimmer under the morning sun. The air here is thin, crisp and carries a profound silence broken only by the call of an endemic bird or the rustle of the wind — a plateau that culminates in a dramatic, sheer precipice known as “World’s End.”

Standing at the Edge of Nothingness

World’s End & Baker’s Falls

The highlight of the 9km circular trek is the legendary World’s End — a sheer drop of nearly 880 metres (2,850 feet). Standing at the edge, looking down into the mist-covered valleys and tea estates below, is a heart-stopping moment of pure awe. Before reaching the main cliff, you encounter “Mini World’s End,” a 270-metre drop that serves as a breathtaking preview of the grandeur to come. Further along, Baker’s Falls — named after the explorer Sir Samuel Baker — tumbles through dense ferns and moss-covered trees, making you feel like an explorer discovering a hidden treasure in a lost world.

Best Times to Visit, Weather & Practical Wisdom

When to visit, how to time your climb, and what to pack.

The 9:00 AM Rule

To witness the spectacular view at World’s End, reach the cliff before 9:00am. After this time, a white wall of mist usually rolls in and completely obscures the 880-metre drop.

Start your journey from Nuwara Eliya by 5:00am. Watching the sunrise over the plains as you begin your hike is a spiritual experience not to be missed.

Climate & Gear

It is significantly colder here, with temperatures dropping to 5°C at dawn. Wear layers and sturdy trekking shoes — the 9km trail can be rocky and muddy in sections.

Practical Wisdom

Three reasons Horton Plains stands apart.

World’s End

The cliff edge offers a sheer 880-metre drop into the lowland plains below — one of the most dramatic natural viewpoints in all of Sri Lanka.

A Plastic-Free Zone

Horton Plains is a strictly enforced plastic-free national park. Carry reusable water bottles and eco-friendly snack packaging to respect its pristine environment.

The 9km Loop Trail

The circular trail takes approximately 3 hours and passes both World’s End and Baker’s Falls — start early and bring a warm layer for the exposed ridgeline.
